Yield impact of weeds

The following practical example is used to calculate how weeds affect grassland quality. But with the right machines, costs are reduced but yield andforage quality are increased.

Grassland target yield

  • Target yield: 10000 kg DM/ha
  • Energy density: 6.0 MJ NEL/kg DM
  • Protein content: 160 g/kg DM

Actual situation

  • 15 % gaps, docks (1 plant/m²) or other useless species of plant

Without calculating any additional damage, there is a “deficit” of:

  • 9000 MJ NEL per ha
  • 240 kg protein per ha

Loss of protein – replaced with soya

  • 240 kg : 40 x 100 = 600 kg soya (per ha GL)
  • 600 kg soya x 0.65 € = € 390.00 (per ha GL)

Energy loss – replaced with wheat

  • 9000 MJ/ha – 4400 MJ/ha (from soya) = 4600 MJ/ha
  • 4600 MJ : 7 MJ/1 kg wheat = approx. 600 kg wheat
  • 650 kg wheat x € 0.36 = € 234.00 (per ha GL)

Total energy and protein loss

 

with 1 dock/m² (or 15% gaps)

  • 600 kg soya x € 0.65 = € 390.00
  • 650 kg wheat x € 0.36 = € 234.00
  • per ha of grassland = € 624.00

with 0.5 docks/m² (damage threshold) = € 312.00 loss per ha of grassland

 

On average, meadows have at least 30% gaps or other lower-quality grasses: Approx. € 1 250.00 loss per ha of grassland
