Series mechanical weeding: 2. Sugar beetRuebe Uebersicht

For sugar beets slow growth and late canopying are typical. Especially for organic sugar beets it is important, that the weed infestation is kept as low as possible in small stages of growth (2- to 6-leaf stage). The ideal pre-conditions have to be set out before seeding.

Before seeding:

Weed control has to start even before seeding. A repeated shallow tillage, for example with the seed bed combination EXTREM or VIBROSTAR, destroys already emerging weeds and stimulates germination of still existing weed seeds. The time between the tillage operations should be 7-10 days. On loose soil the weed control can be done with a tined weeder. Especially the new AEROSTAR-ROTATION is very effective in pulling out weed.

After seeding:

Ruebe jungBlind weeding should not be done in sugar beets because of the highly sensitive germ tubes. Therefore it is important that the first use of the row hoe CHOPSTAR is done immediately after the rows are visible. Crop-deflector-discs should be used for protecting the little plants. The still very little plants must not be covered with soil by the tines. The shallow working vibrotines are perfect for this job.

Weed control in the row with the tined weeder is possible from the 4-leaf-stage. It can happen, that some beet plants are getting pulled out, but the amount of hand weeding is strongly reduced by using the tined weeder. The tined weeder has to be set very accurate and precisely according to the conditions for keeping the loss low. The AEROSTAR-EXACT is perfectly suited for such sensitive conditions because of the pivoting rear wheels, the hydraulic tine-adjustment and the 600 mm long and Ø 7 mm tine.

The use of the rotary hoe ROTARYSTAR is possible for breaking soil encrustations. Although the weeding effect is not very high with this machine, the soil can be effectively loosened and the effect of the following use of a tined weeder can be increased.

The following row hoe and tined weeder operations can be done until row closing. The frequency of use is depending on the weed pressure and of course on the weather. For further operations a combination of row-crop cultivator with finger weeder elements is recommended, so weeds growing in the row are also controlled. An automatic camera steering system provides more precision in hoeing. The ROW-GUARD detects the green crop rows and steers the row-crop cultivator exactly through the rows via a side-shift-frame. The system is adaptive and can easily be retro-fitted.

The use of a tined weeder is – depending on the weather – perfect a few days after hoeing. Weeds can be pulled out or buried better, because the surface is already loosened.
