Has drought severely damaged your meadow? Proper grassland care
with a tined seeder is crucial for the health of the meadow in the coming years.

Brown patches, dead grasses, and large gaps in the turf: After severe drought, grassland stands can be severely damaged. Open spots in the turf develop especially where valuable forage grasses have died off. These are quickly taken over by unwanted grasses and herbs.

If you want to preserve your grassland, it’s essential to restore the grassland, remove dead material, and fill the resulting gaps with high-quality grass seed. Weeding and reseeding are key measures for restoring drought-damaged meadows.

 

Before beginning the actual restoration, timing is crucial. Even the best seed can only germinate successfully if sufficient moisture is present. Therefore, after a drought, it’s important not to act hastily, but to take the next steps in a targeted and thoughtful manner.

Step 1: Wait for moisture – do not reseed in dry soil

After weeks without sufficient rainfall, timing is crucial. The seed requires sufficient moisture to germinate and establish successfully. Therefore, the most important rule is: Don’t just go by the calendar; instead, go by the actual field conditions. As soon as rainfall has sufficiently moistened the topsoil again and further favourable conditions are expected, the restoration can begin.

Late summer often offers an ideal window of opportunity for this. The soil is still warm, while at the same time the days are getting shorter and evaporation is decreasing compared to midsummer. Depending on the region, elevation, and general precipitation levels, conditions can vary significantly.

 

Step 2: Thoroughly weed out dead material

This is where the grassland weeder comes into play. In cases of severe drought damage, gentle and superficial treatment is not enough. The tines must remove dead plant residues, thatch, and low-quality material from the stand and open the turf. This creates open areas where the new seed can make contact with the soil and establish itself.

 

The more severely the stand is already damaged, the more intensive and aggressive the restoration must be. In cases of a high proportion of low-quality grasses, it may also be advisable to weed (1+2) multiple times, followed by swathing (3) and removing the dead material from the field, before reseeding (4) in the next step.

Step 3: Overseed the resulting gaps immediately

After weeding, the turf is open – which is why, whenever possible, reseeding should be done together with grassland care. A pneumatic seeding box distributes the appropriate seed mixture evenly and close to the ground across the working width.

 

The optimal seed mixture and seeding rate depend, among other factors, on the site, intensity of use, existing grass, and extent of damage. A forage seed mixture suitable for the farm and the region should be selected. Nowadays there are many different and appropriate seed mixtures available for this purpose, depending on the region.

 

After reseeding, a separate rolling pass may be beneficial. This presses the seed onto the soil and ensures good soil contact. As a result, existing soil moisture can better reach the seed, and optimal germination conditions are achieved. Especially in stands that are severely damaged by dry conditions and have sparse cover, rolling supports rapid and successful seedling establishment. It is important to roll only when the soil has sufficient bearing capacity and to avoid compaction under excessively wet conditions. If there is sufficient moisture or rain after seeding, rolling may not be necessary.

Severe drought can significantly degrade a grassland stand within just a few weeks and allow weeds to take hold even in previously healthy stands. To prevent this from happening, proactive measures must be taken.

 

The most important steps after severe drought damage:

  1. Wait for sufficient soil moisture – do not reseed in bone-dry soil.
  2. Thoroughly weed out dead material and loosen the turf.
  3. Remove the weeded-out material.
  4. Reseed gaps with high-quality forage grasses and roll afterwards if necessary.
  5. Strengthen the existing grassland in the long term, e.g., by using a grassland weeder and reseeding again in the spring.
